A QES is a Qualified Electronic Signature, which is legally equivalent to a handwritten signature. It is created using cryptography, ensures the identity of the signer, and guarantees that the data has not been altered after signing. The law of Ukraine defines QES as the signature with the highest level of trust and protection.

  • EDS — the old name, which was transformed into QES with the adoption of the new law. There are now two types of signatures:
  • QES — stored on secure devices, cannot be copied, offers the highest level of security.
  • UES — stored as a file, can be copied, therefore has a lower level of trust.

Both use a qualified certificate of a public key, but the level of trust differs. For users, the difference is primarily in the storage method and the level of key protection.

A cloud-based signature is your QES stored in a secure cloud storage. It is available online 24/7 and does not require a token or physical devices.

Cloud QES — a modern solution: works from a smartphone or laptop, no tokens or flash drives. High level of security, suitable for all documents. We recommend this. Token (USB device) — the classic QES option. Reliable but not mobile: requires a physical device and drivers. File-based key — a simple option with the lowest level of security. Possible for internal use, for sole proprietors, and primary documentation. Not always accepted by government agencies or counterparties.

The validity period of a qualified certificate of a public key (QES or UES) can be up to 2 years. After the expiration date, it needs to be renewed. However, signed documents remain valid indefinitely — they can be verified even decades later. For long-term storage of electronic documents, we recommend using the CAdES-X-Long signature format, which preserves validity verification even after the certificate expires.
